Due to a bit of a backlog with posts, I’m writing this blog a couple of months after the event and in fact just a day before I undertake part of the journey in reverse. By the time you read this, I’ll have undertaken another Eurostar trip (read about that soon), but for now let’s focus on my journey from Amsterdam to London in Eurostar’s ‘Standard’ seats.

AMS-RTM NS Intercity Direct – 2nd Class
Whilst the majority of Intercity services operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) operate on the conventional Dutch railway network, some services between Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, Rotterdam, Breda and Belgium operate across the ‘HSL Zuid’ under the sub brand of ‘Intercity Direct’.
AMF-GOU NS Intercity – 2nd Class
During my trip to The Netherlands back in October and given Utrecht’s excellent location at the centre of the rail network, I decided to take the opportunity to explore the Dutch railways. My first aim was to travel on each of the five private operators that run services, the second was to try out the different types of Intercity train operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS).
AMS-UTC ICE International – 2nd Class
Having arrived in Amsterdam Centraal onboard a Eurostar service from London, the next stage of this Dutch adventure was to make my way to the city of Utrecht where I was staying. With numerous services connecting the two cities, I had decided to travel on a slightly rarer one, an International ICE.
STP-AMS Eurostar – Standard Premier
It had been a while since I had to catch a Thameslink service as I was travelling before the first LNER, but back in October I was at the station in time for the 0419 to head into London. With Thameslink dropping me off at St Pancras, I had just two escalators to climb before reaching the next point on my journey, Eurostar’s check-in.
Trying the TER – France’s Regional Railways
Well, if we’re honest, my first impressions of SNCF’s Transport Express Régional (TER) weren’t great. The morning of our planned trip to Paris, I woke up to an email (in French of course) from SNCF advising me that owing to our train taking a diversionary route, we would have to take a rail replacement bus to the next station.
