Having had a couple of nights based in the costal city of Rimini, it was time to continue my journey with an afternoon of travelling. From Rimini a pair of Trenitalia would take me first north to Bologna, before then heading south and west to the Italian capital, Rome.

Rimini – The Ancient City of Ariminum
With the one full non-travel day having been spent exploring the city and country of San Marino, I had made sure that my train out of Rimini was late enough to give me a chance to explore the city before I had to head to the station. As such day 5 of (Not Quite) All the Small Things started with me heading away from Rimini’s station to the first of many Roman ruins, the Roman Amphitheatre.
The Most Serene Republic of San Marino
Having arrived in Rimini onboard a Trenitalia Frecciarossa from Bologna, I had two nights and about one and a half days based on the Adriatic Coast. Whilst I wanted to spend some time exploring the city itself, the main purpose of my stay was to tick off another micro-nation, San Marino.
BLQ-RIM Trenitalia Frecciarossa – Premium Class
Bologna is one of Italy’s major railway crossroads, with high-speed, inter-city, regional and local lines intersecting at the city’s main station, Bologna Centrale. Having arrived into the underground platforms that serve the high-speed Turin to Salerno route (via Milan, Bologna, Florence & Rome), I had made my way through the underground maze to reach the station’s ground level platforms.
MIL-BLQ Trenitalia Frecciarossa – Business Class
Having arrived in Milan onboard an SBB service from Zurich, I was about halfway through my travels for the day, with two trains left to take before I arrived at my destination for the evening. The first of these was from Milano Centrale to Bologna Centrale with Trenitalia in ‘Business Class’.
ZRH-MIL SBB EuroCity – 2nd Class
Starting Day 3 of (Not Quite) All the Small Things with a visit to the world’s sixth smallest country, Liechtenstein, it was soon time for me to head back into Switzerland and catch a train to Zurich for the next leg of my journey. With my end destination for the day being Rimini on Italy’s Adriatic Coast, I had a few trains ahead of me. First step was to cross the Alps with SBB from Zurich to Milano Centrale.
