At the end of March I jumped onboard an LNER service to head north and spend a couple of nights in Newcastle. As much as I love Newcastle, my stay was not to enjoy the city itself but to travel on some horrendously timed trains and explore some more the of the East Coast. Six stations were ticked off over the course of the trip, but this episode of Exploring the East Coast covers three of them: Alnmouth, Acklington and Widdrington.

PBO-NCL LNER – 1st Class
Having already had plenty of trips with LNER up and down the East Coast Mainline (ECML), I decided it was time for another as I headed to Newcastle for a couple of nights to explore some more of the East Coast. Thanks to a discount (more on that later) I was travelling in first once again and was hoping to try out the ‘Dish’ menu that I keep missing out on.
Exploring the East Coast – Prestonpans, Longnidrry & Drem
As you may have seen on my social media, I’ve made six visits to Scotland in the first four months of 2023 for a mix of work and leisure. Back at the end of February I was north of the border for work but had some spare time one morning and so decided to do a quick trip over south side of the Firth of Forth to do an Exploring the East Coast.
EDB-PBO LNER – 1st Class
Having enjoyed a weekend in Glasgow, including a day exploring the railways around the city, we had made our way back over in Edinburgh ready for our journey back south with LNER in first class.
Exploring Glasgow’s Railways
With our stay in Glasgow being bookended by trips with LNER, you’d think I’d have had my fill of trains for the weekend. However, with Beth and my in-laws attending various Folk music concerts which don’t fall within my circle of interests, I decided to spend my Saturday exploring some of the railways that fan out from Glasgow Central.
PBO-EDB LNER – 1st Class
The end of January saw my second trip to Scotland of the year, with Beth & I heading north with my in-laws to spend the weekend in Glasgow. The first part of this trip saw us travelling from Peterborough to Edinburgh with LNER and on this occasion we’d decided to upgrade to first class.
